Hear all that yelling and screaming at Abbott Elementary? It isn’t coming from the kids. That is “the gang” from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” who will be visiting “Abbott Elementary” as volunteers in the highly anticipated crossover.
In the upcoming Episode 9 of “Abbott Elementary” Season 4, Ava announces the school district is sending a group of volunteers to help out at Abbott, but “things don’t go as planned” when they arrive, ABC says about the episode.
Janelle James, who plays Principal Ava in the show, told USA TODAY “it was cool and surreal” to have the actors from “It’s Sunny” on their set and “be on their set in Paddy’s Pub.”
“I’ve been a fan since the first one,” James says of “Sunny,” which premiered in 2005. “I was in in high school defending it. ‘No, it’s funny. It’s meant to be satire,'” she adds with a laugh.
The Emmy-award winning show’s fourth season, which premiered on Oct. 9, has been a hit with viewers, with live and same day audience witnessing a 321% jump as viewership soared from 2.13 million to 8.96 million, according to ABC.
Here’s what to know about “Abbott Elementary’s” crossover episode with “It’s Sunny in Philadelphia” during Season 4, including the release date and cast.
The “Abbott Elementary” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” crossover episode will air on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT on ABC. It will be available to stream on Hulu the next day.
ABC will air the episode again on Friday, Jan. 10 at 8:30 p.m. EST.
The previous three seasons of “Abbott Elementary” are also available to stream on Hulu.
Hulu offers membership options ranging from $7.99 a month to $17.99 a month for normal streaming services and $75.99 a month to $89.99 a month for plans with streaming and live television. New users can also sign up for a free trial.
The cast for Season 4 of “Abbott Elementary” includes:
An ABC rep told USA TODAY earlier that all series regulars from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” will be in the episode. Based on photos from the episode and behind the scenes pictures shared by cast members on social media, viewers can expect to see Danny DeVito, Glenn Howerton, Charlie Day, Kaitlin Olson and Rob McElhenney in it.
Quinta Brunson, who is also a showrunner, while speaking on “Live with Kelly and Mark” just before the season premiere said she’s “really excited” about the crossover episode this season. Another crossover episode between the two shows will also feature in the upcoming Season 17 of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”
“These are two shows that take place in Philadelphia,” Brunson said. “We take place in west Philadelphia, they take place in South, so it’s just really cool to bring them together. Our city is very diverse and (has) different pockets, but we interact with each other all the time and so this is like a perfect example of that on screen.”
In a separate interview with US Weekly, Brunson called the collaboration “a fun way to shake up TV.”
“I think it’s unexpected and I think that it’ll be like a delight to the audience of both shows,” Brunson had told US Weekly.
“Abbott Elementary” follows a “group of dedicated, passionate teachers and a slightly tone-deaf principal” who are “determined to help their students” at a Philadelphia public school thrive despite the odds stacked against them, the show’s official synopsis says.
On the other hand, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” which debuted in 2005, follows “five ne’er-do-wells” – Mac, Dennis, Charlie, Sweet Dee and Frank – who own and operate Paddy’s Pub in Philadelphia, reads the show’s synopsis.
“Their constant scheming usually lands them in a world of hurt, yet they never seem to learn from their mistakes,” it adds.
Season 4 of “Abbott Elementary” is expected to have 22 episodes, according to ABC.
